Gilchrist detects an “anarchist mentality” at universities

William Godwin…, the founder of philosophical anarchism…, argued that government is a corrupting force in society, perpetuating dependence and ignorance….

—The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy

LIKE BILL O'REILLY, Jim Gilchrist is fond of straw men. Or maybe he's just incredibly clueless. Dunno.

From today’s San Bernardino Sun: Minuteman co-founder cancels visit to college
Jim Gilchrist believes Pomona College has an "anarchist mentality."

The Minuteman Project co-founder abruptly canceled an appearance at the school for that reason, citing his fear that the event could lead to someone being stabbed or killed.

…The characterization of the school as a violent, anarchist institution by the anti-illegal-immigration group's founder has left students and administrators stunned.

…A weeks-long private battle between Gilchrist, the Pomona Student Union and the college's newspaper… culminated with Gilchrist's appearance March 30 on Fox News Channel's "The O'Reilly Factor," where he first announced publicly his decision to cancel his participation in an immigration debate at the school.

…Gilchrist and host Bill O'Reilly talked for a few minutes about the punishment handed down to students at Columbia University in New York, where an October appearance by Gilchrist was disrupted by students who rushed the stage in protest….

"I've canceled here at Pomona College," Gilchrist said. "... I have canceled that presentation for the same reason that I should have canceled Columbia, because of an anarchist mentality on the universities, and it's a shame."

…"We've been very impressed by the students (who attend on-campus debates and speeches)," said Nick Eubank, a senior at the college and vice president of the Student Union. "They're all very respectful and are interested in challenging the speakers through questions."

Eubank cited a recent debate at the school that featured UC Berkeley law professor John Yoo, a controversial figure best known for writing legal memos while working for the Department of Justice that appeared to justify interrogation techniques that have been characterized as torture.

"We had some people protesting. They weren't students," Eubank said. "The students in the audience yelled at them and told them to go away, so they left."

Mr. Gilchrist once spoke at IVC, (2004?, 05?). I believe our students, staff, faculty and community were respectful, although I am sure not everyone agreed with his point of view.

Glichrist looked then and looks now Anglo to me, wouldn't that mean his ancestors were once also imigrants?

Sometimes you just can't get a Los Angeles Times reporter to read a sentence for what it actually says.

In the decision in the Gilchrist Minuteman case yesterday, the Judge wrote a pretty clear sentence in his order regarding Gilchrist's request: "The application for a writ of possession is denied."

Unfortunately, the reporter for the Times couldn't quite get what that sentence in the Order meant, as she wrote in today's paper "Minuteman Project co-founder Jim Gilchrist and his opponents within the anti-illegal-immigration group both claimed victory Friday after an Orange County Superior Court judge put Gilchrist back in charge of the organization's funds but indicated that those assets might soon be put into receivership." The reality is, the Judge DID NOT put Gilchrist "back in charge of the organization's funds." I explained this ad nauseum to the reporter, but she was argumentative with me, didn't like the Orange County Register front page above-the-fold headline stating "Gilchrist Loses Round in Court," complained to me that the Register "often gets facts wrong," and just didn't grasp the simple statement of the Judge: "The application for a writ of possession is denied."

The truth is, the Court DENIED the Court Order Gilchrist was seeking to be put back in charge of all the organization's funds. That is what the words "The application for a writ of possession is denied" mean.

As a result of the Court Order, Gilchrist maintains control of assets he always had in his possession, and the Defendants retain control of the assets they have, such as membership lists, web based assets, office equipment, and a bank account (which is frozen for now, but not turned over to Gilchrist). Gilchrist did not "regain" anything. In fact, by filing his case, Gilchrist has now made himself vulnerable to a very likely Court-ordered receivership on April 25. (Which would not have been possible if Gilchrist had never filed his case.)

As for the story, fortunately, most of the other journalists covering the case got it right for their readers.

Jim Gilchrist has gone off the deep end. Now it is clear why the Minuteman Project, Inc. Board of Directors; Marvin Stewart, Deborah Courtney and Barbara Coe decided to remove Jim Gilchrist from his position with the organization. Marvin Stewart is now the President and Deborah Courtney is now the Treasurer of the Minuteman Project, Inc.

Orange County Superior Court Judge Randell Wilkinson denied Plaintiff Jim Gilchrist's request today to extend by 90 days the hearing in receivership of Minuteman Project Inc., currently scheduled for April 25. Gilchrist filed papers yesterday seeking an "ex parte" order and arguing that a delay was necessary to allow time for an "audit." Gilchrist claims he is the "sole director" of Minuteman in the face of substantial evidence to the contrary that others were also on the Board of Directors. The Judge rejected Gilchrist's request out of hand within hours of receiving his attorney's papers today, and without even requiring a hearing or an opposition paper filed by the Defendants. As a result, a receivership hearing is definitely scheduled for April 25, and Defendants Marvin L. Stewart, Deborah Courtenay Peterson and Barbara Coe all favor receiviership of Minuteman Project, Inc., assets pending trial on who actually should control the assets

Chunk:

Can you please confirm something? I am hearing Gilchrist will be teaching a class at Saddleback in the fall. Is there a way you can confirm this?

Professor Zero said...

Heavens. I have seen Pomona College.
It is polite and when I saw it, staid.

hmm, Gilchrist teaching at Saddleback?

The fall schedule is still being puit together but I assume someone knows something somewhere - I hope they share.

In which discipline would he teach?

Will he join our union?

Gilchrist has an MBA - so he can teach in the business dept.

He's also a former newspaper reporter - so maybe he can teach journalism...

Well duh chuck!

If you knew in advance it was going to be violent, would you show up to speak?!?

Glichrist had every RIGHT to cancel Pomona. I think "anarchist" is the appropriate word. Hey, if it quacks like a duck...

And where's campus police when you need them?

What other word would you have to describe it chuck?

And so I guess Glichrist is a RACIST because he advocates doing something THE MAJORITY OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE WANT but the politicians don’t have the gonads to do!

No more PC PLEEZE!

As a student at Pomona College, I know for a fact that security had already been arranged for the event including the campus security department and the local city police. Additionally, the event was only to be open to students, faculty, and staff. There has only been one problem with this organization's events and it was caused be people outside of the college disrupting an event. They were booed by the students and promptly removed from the auditorium. The Pomona Student Union is probably the most respected organization on campus (its completely student run with a board of directors that includes students from all political persuasions . . . including conservatives, it has a permanent endowment, has hosted high profile speakers before, etc . . .).

There was no reason for Gilchrist to slander Pomona on national television . . . period. The Pomona Student Union acted in good faith and offered to publish in the school newspaper a completely unedited interview with Mr. Gilchrist to help dispel his concerns with the accuracy of the previous article reporting the upcoming debate (read it here and decide if it was controversial: http://www.tsl.pomona.edu/index.php?article=2286). Instead he decided to cancel at the last minute, leaving no time to secure a replacement speaker and then slander a college that he has never visited and a student body that he has never met.

Gilchrist will be team-teaching with Howard Gensler at Saddleback in the fall...

Anonymous said...

ah - so this is their enrollment management strategy!

Chuck sits at home for hours and goes frame by frame with video until he can capture the ugliest possible snapshots of these guys so he can posts them here on his blog. The same technique is used on our board of trustees. Ya know Chuck, the same thing can be done with images of you…

Anonymous said...

don't you think our Nazi board would like Gilchrist here?

Anonymous said...

I think it's anarchistitude!

Anonymous said...

No way would Gensler's department chair or dean would hire Gilchrist to do anything, or team Gensler with him, and Gensler gets his contract-max 8 courses, so there's no room for leftovers.

Please, Social & Behavioral Sciences at Saddleback has suffered enough with rumors - remember when people thought Frogue's JFK conspiracy course was actually in their history department?

Of course at SOCCCD you can't believe anything until it has been officially denied; maybe the dean and chair are in for another surprise from on high. Our district motto should be "If you need to know, you won't."

Who's *Chuck*?

Geez, 12:02, you're even more clueless than the pitiful and pathetic Board.
