Saddleback's Burnett seeks Riverside Chancellor gig

Three finalists named for chancellor job (The Press-Enterprise, May 1)

The presidents of three colleges are finalists for chancellor of Riverside Community College District after a national search, officials said Thursday, May 1.
Saddleback College President Tod A. Burnett, Sacramento City College President Kathryn E. Jeffery and Milwaukee Area Technical College President Michael L. Burke have been invited to speak in public forums and candidate interviews in the district, which includes Riverside City, Moreno Valley and Norco colleges.
. . .
Burnett, an Irvine resident, has been president of Saddleback College in Mission Viejo since 2008. He was previously vice chancellor for California Community Colleges. His experience includes an appointment in 2003 as deputy appointments secretary for the governor and work with the Environmental Protection Agency. He has a doctorate in education....

I don't think they're going to like his defense of prayer in the schools anymore than they did up north. I could be wrong though. My pals in that district are very interested in this issue.

Let's not be so mean spirited. Saddleback has improved immensely under Tod Burnett's leadership. The high performers at the college love him, and there's a reason for that. He empowers us to do well, and he's made us better. Recent community surveys show that over the past five years we have made huge gains in our community's perception of us, which is amazingly positive. Saddleback is on the right track, and it's because of President Burnett. It's understandable that there are differing opinions, but the negative, mean-spirited comments here are by those who are frankly jealous and couldn't stand the idea of having to meet expectations.

We have made gains in the community's perception because we have slowly removed most of the people Raghu installed. My primary objection to Burnett has to do with his stand on the prayer issue which I find indefensible. I feel the same way about Roquemore.

The prayer issue wasn't Tod's issue -- it was the board's issue.

I disagree.

Okay, so disagree. You're allowed. But why be so angry after all this time? You are not coming across well. Let it go, my friend.

You err if you think this is just one person or a simple story. It is not. I think Burnett's attitude through this whole affair shows what he is made of and it is very ugly. Whet he did here - not out of any real conviction on his part but just because he is the political animal he is - shows how much he is willing to sacrifice others (students! staff! faculty!) for personal gain. If in interviews he blames it on the board or others, well, he is doing what he has always done. The record shows otherwise and most see through his disingenuousness.

4:39 - It sounds like you expect integrity and leadership from a college president - let alone a chancellor. Good for you.

After the settlement, which led to the embrace of a policy that gave the decision to have a prayer during commencement to the "organizing committee," sans board/administrator influence, Burnett exploited an alleged loophole and overrode the committee decision. There was a prayer.

Re Burnett's role: see Saddleback College President Tod Burnett to Impose Prayer on Campus?
Who does Tod Burnett think he is? Saddleback Prez imposes prayer at commencement

If you're God you do not need to pray. If you're not God then you may want to reconsider.

Tod could sell his home in Irvine and buy a mansion in Riverside County. Sign Me up!
