Agenda

As is his custom, Chancellor Gary Poertner has emailed the district community, making the agenda for next week’s meeting of the SOCCD Board of Trustees (BOT) available: here.
I’ll have a chance to look at it more carefully later. I did notice, however, this item for the closed session (at 5:00 p.m.):
Public Employee Employment, Evaluation of Performance, Discipline, Dismissal, Release (5):
Director, Student Life (IVC)
Here are the two “discussion items” for the open session:
4.1 Irvine Valley College Approach to Student Success Act of 2012 Representatives from Irvine Valley College will make a presentation in response to Task Force Recommendation 2: Strengthen Support for Entering Students, Section 2.2 Diagnostic assessment, orientation, and educational plan.

4.2 SOCCCD: Business Process Analysis (BPA) for the HR/Financial Software System Procurement and Implementation Project Report on meetings conducted district-wide to review and analyze our current business practices to become more efficient and improve services.

Why is Glenn trying to fire Helen Locke? It's all about the money, ASIVC money. Helen has insisted that it go to our co-curriculars and clubs, per the law, but Glenn wants to divert it into the foundation to buoy up that sinking ship. Those of us with co-curriculars and clubs need to let the board know what's really going on before we lose those funds.

If that is the case, show up at the board meeting and state your case in public comments.

Right, and get fired next...
Not "your case" either--all faculty's and students' case.

Well, if people don't stand up - then there's nothing to be done.

When was the last time a tenured faculty was fired? Bunch of whiners that are afraid to stand up for what is right.

To set the record straight; Helen Locke is not, was not universally loved and admired by all tenured faculty members, and not even all of those who advise student club, extra- or co-curricular. Many of us found her difficult to work with and her management style offended many students. Under her guidance, ASIVC continued to host ridiculous and infantile events that were embarrassing for a college campus. But this is OLD news. And certainly not the ground for Glen's quick attempt to dismiss her. Glen LIKES a good bounce house.

Yes, Helen was the beneficiary of the new order that materialized when Raghu Mathur became IVC Prez in 1997. Eventually, Mathur gifted many of his old cronies, like Helen (and overnight cronies, such as Glenn), with great jobs for which they were not remotely quaified. Our recent coverage emphasizes the manner in which firings (or attempted firings) occur and the curious manner in which these people are replaced--under the Roquemore regime.

I love it when they take each other down. So special. She didn't stand up for anyone during the bad years.

What do you mean not qualified? She worked in Pauline Merry's student services office for many years while earing her MBA. Then when the position opened she applied and was shafted in the hiring process simply because some didn't want her to get a fair shot. She was then hired as the best candidate in the second round after the original committee members suffering from chronic stinkeye were replaced. Her whole career has been about working with, and servicing students. Please explain how she was not qualified.

Stinkeye commitee members, no doubt all friends of Roy. Seems to me Helen earned her position by working hard and doing good work for the students. Contrary to Roy there was no "gifting of good jobs" but rather an attempt at curbing rampant hiring committee abuse.

Roy's obituary in LA Times and Register: "we were lucky to have you while we did"

This ran in the Sunday December 24, 2023 edition of the Los Angeles Times and the Orange County Register : July 14, 1955 - November 20, 2...
