Ship Ahoy!

The Black Pearl, now parked in front of A-100 with a  valid staff parking pass.
Denizens of IVC, especially those who attempt to locate parking in the staff lot directly in front of A-100, will have noticed recently that one of the vehicles finding refuge in the ever-shrinking lot is a hearty mini-van version of the Black Pearl, Jack Sparrow's fine craft (though Rebel Girl's son will explain that the Black Pearl was originally owned by Davy Jones, lead singer of the Monkees, and then Jack Sparrow, only to be stolen by Barbossa who teaches in the Physical Sciences).  Rebel Girl has often wondered which faculty member or staff would drive a pirate ship but has been too busy to inquire.

But Rebel Girl digresses.

The Black Pearl now resides quite regularly in the staff lot.  Go see for yourself.

One fine lad did today and this was his report:

He too was looking for safe port in the heat wave. Plus he had a class to teach. The Black Pearl got to a vacant site first and dropped anchor. Too bad for our lad. He noticed, as so many of us have in recent days, that the wenches who disembarked didn't fit the usual description of staff and or faculty. They seemed, uh, younger, more frisky.

He called out, all friendly like. "Do you work here?" he asked. He has a friendly face, one of the the friendliest. So they answered.

"No," came the reply.

"You can't park here then," he said.

"Yes we can," came the reply. "We have a permit."

"But the lot is just for faculty and staff."

"My dad works here. He's a professor."

"Doesn't matter."

"He said we could."

"Who's your dad?"

And here it comes, faithful readers:

"Howard Gensler."

Blimey.

You can't make this stuff up.
Not Johnny Depp.
Johnny Depp.

Gensler strikes again. The gift that keeps on giving. (Are you making this up? I really cannot tell.)

Anonymous said...

Of course.

Howard!

(I've seen that van.)

Will Howie react with any contriteness about his spoiled brood?

Boy thinks his dad works here still?? Delusional like daddy.

Let's not criticize the kids. They were doing what their father said to do.

I still think we need that row of parking in front of A-440 back. Even if you kick all the sons and daughters out - we still don't have enough. And, come on, they're NOT going to kick the sons and daughters out. It's unenforceable. The policy relies on the integrity of staff and faculty and well, we know about that.

What kind of consequences are leveled at someone like Howard who has violated this policy? Just curious.

I mean, when I can't find parking because say the Black Pearl and other pirates have scooped up what few spaces there are and so after circling the campus for 30 minutes on the first day of class I must park in the sand lot next to the Goodwill van just so I can make it to class on time - and I get a ticket - and yes, even though I explained the circumstances, I must pay the ticket - well, what does Howard have to pay?

Hmmm. Let me think. Former beloved administrator with friends in high places..NOTHING. Am I right?

You know, I realize that it's probably healthy to remember Gensler as a joke the size of a big boat. But that man was so insidious and threatening that I still feel the tremor just looking at an old photo of his weasely face.

Claire Spark: "The long memory is the most radical idea in America." Who remembers the epic poem (re) written by the Genz? And who, besides Red Emma, anticipates joyfully a parking pirates epic in verse rewrite of, say, Treasure Island? We can hope! Aargh.

I think Howard should have to pay for everyone's parking tickets.

Didn't Howard try to sell part of the college?

The famous Howard Hilton project.

Howard never got in trouble for any of it. Instead he got tenure and a teaching gig.

They never apologized for inflicting him on us. They never apologized about anything. That's why I don't respect them.

Did you contact campus police with this? If not then you are part if the problem too.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, yeah, yeah. How much of the problem? So if Rebel Girl writes about something - then goes and teaches all her classes, and meets all her students and grades all her papers and goes to all her meetings and doesn't forward every parking lot pirate encounter reported to her to campus police, she is the problem? Or part of it?

To be honest, the police have better things to do. Perhaps the faculty and staff who read this and give their passes and parking spots to their kids are the real audience.

How can the police enforce this policy? Watch who emerges from vehicles in staff parking lots and then question suspicious people? Not hardly. Dissent readers have been doing a pretty good job noticing these issues but they're IN the lots, often at peak times and are highly motivated.

I do think it's pretty obvious to most (obviously not all) that we do not have enough parking spots for faculty and staff at key times. Especially since we do rely on many adjunct faculty who do not have the leisure to arrive and hour or two before their classes to teach. One issue that can be addressed to adding additional faculty and staff spaces.

Besides, I think the campus police read the blog, so there.

For years I have been reading this blog and noticing how they point out things that are pretty obvious to everyone. Somehow when it hits the blog, there is often a response. I just wonder why it takes so long, I mean everyone knows much of this stuff, they just don't do much about it until pushed. Even then they don't do enough. How about the plagiarizing commencement speaker?

(And of course they point out other issues that are not obvious but should be).

The campus cops do read the blog. Some of them. enough of them. Most people, after all, take a look at the blog.

Take pictures, and post them.

WARNING: ONE OF THOSE SURPRISE AND UNFORESEEN CLOSURES OF A THIRD OF THE STAFF PARKING SPOTS IN THE BIG IVC LOT. IF YOU HAVEN'T ARRIVED TO WORK YET, GIVE UP NOW.

Anonymous said...

The great thing about the closure other than the vacancy of the spaces if that no one knows what event is so important to sacrifice all the spaces. Why can't they take those spaces from the sdtuent lot nearby? Why?

Anonymous said...

They sent out a notice yesterday all about it.

Anonymous said...

12:30 - reserved parking spaces still empty.

Anonymous said...

There doesn't seem to be a parking problem on Fridays?

Anonymous said...

Reserved spaces still empty: 1:30. It's been 6.5 hours and counting.

Anonymous said...

I never saw any one parking in the reserved spots all day - ans then, suddenly, in VERY LATE AFTERNOON, the ribbons and cones were taken away. What is up with that????

Anonymous said...

Can someone please tell us what event was held today at IVC that required closing a third of the staff lot at the front of the college? pretty please?

I too never saw any cars parked there.

Someone must know.

Anonymous said...

How about the Obumster losing that debate?

Anonymous said...

I think the closure was for a foundation meeting held in the late afternoon.

Anonymous said...

I don't think there was a meeting or an event. I think it was a mistake. I never saw any cars parked out there all day long. I just wish they would communicate just a bit more about stuff that impacts our work days here. If you can't get parking, you can't get to your class on time. 6 weeks in, student still arrive late because of parking - and you know, I believe them because I arrive late too.

When we buy two staff permits instead of one, we have to sign some form. I think it states that we won't give the other pass to someone else and will use it responsibly. Clearly Howard (and others) have violated this policy. What ARE the consequences? Anyone know?

Anonymous said...

There must be some equation about the number of parking spaces needed at the peak hours of activity (morning M-TH) - you know, projected number of students plus the numbers of employees equals the number of spaces needed. I have students who park across the street at the strip mall.

When will you do a thread on the presidential debate and how Romney clearly won?

What's the matter, dont want to discuss?

Roy Bauer said...

We don't usually comment on the Presidential race.

Anonymous said...

Obama certainly wasn't on his game, but at least he is not the sociopath that Romney is, who'll say just about anything at any time in order to try and get what he wants. The man is shameless.

I see BHO's smear campaign has worked on you. Unable to think for yourself. Drink more Kool-Aid...

Please don't feed the trolls.

Anonymous said...

I DID see both Presidential candidates in the parking lot today. They both had staff stickers.

Anonymous said...

Well, 3:08, can you point out any consistent Romney perspective on any major policy matter since he was governor?

tick tick tick
